Travel information for the Road to the Isles

The Road to the Isles starts at the western end of Corpach which is part of the Fort William community township. The main route out to Glenfinnan, Glenuig, Arisaig and Mallaig is along the A830 which as we write, has a newly opened stretch of road which for the first time ever, means that travellers can enjoy a significant improvement in journey times and safety. The new road has upgraded the route from part single-track road to a full two-lane modern road.

We are excited about this because every time a new road is built new views are created and a new way of looking at things occurs. We believe that this massive improvement to the road will provide a superb experience for thousands of people who make the journey out to Mallaig to catch the ferry to Skye or two enjoy a peaceful holiday.

Take the Train
The West Highland Line takes travellers by train from Fort William and Mallaig with stops along the way at Fassifern, Glenfinnan, Lochailort, Arisaig, and Morar. The journey by train is extremely scenic and is amongst the best railway journeys in the world. During the summer months, the Jacobite Train takes visitors along the route with a steam locomotive, while you can also take the scheduled diesel powered commuter train.

Visitors planning to explore the Isle of Skye first, via the Skye Bridge, have a fun opportunity to take a ferry from Armadale on the Sleat peninsula of Skye which is a 30 minute crossing to Mallaig. Once ashore you can enjoy the journey to Fort William at a leisurely pace.
